The ‘Incubator for Northern Design and Innovation’ (INDI) is a conduit towards creating design innovation and community-based sustainable economies in the Canadian North. INDI functions as a hub for creative exchange between various ‘ways of knowing’ and will originate mutually beneficial networks and collaborations between Northern communities, creative industries, academia and entrepreneurial expertise.

INDI asks the question: ‘how can the Canadian North become an international nucleus for design innovation sustained by Indigenous knowledge and skill while establishing a global showcase for northern ingenuity’.

INDI will bring together the local and the global to co-create new realities. Design is an appropriate vehicle to achieve this, it utilizes an integrative process that naturally draws together knowledge from various fields and disciplines in order to create innovation through synergy. Our vision is to generate opportunities for ethical exchange through creating multifaceted collaborations that will result in tangible, high-quality and sustainable solutions for contemporary community life while building a creative economy in Canada’s North. The linking of local knowledge and skill with a global cohort of creative thinkers, producers and entrepreneurs will contribute to creating innovative solutions for Northern societal issues while facilitating cultural continuity and environmental sustainability.

INDI will create space and support for new collaborations between diverse stakeholders, it will prototype palpable social and technological innovation while seeking to overwrite the largely southern solutions for Northern living.
